e-GEOS and SES announced they will will join their forces to build the Matera User Ground Station (MUGS) for the European Data Relay System (EDRS). The Ground Station is designed to receive, process and distribute streams of data for the EDRS space segments, which will serve the EU's Earth Observation Programme Copernicus, supporting agricolture, urban area managment, civil and nature protection.
EDRS, developed under a public-private partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus, is an optical satellite communications system enabling near-realtime data relay from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites to Europe.
The project will be managed by ESA and led by e-GEOS in quality of prime contractor, in strict collaboration with SES, selected in order to design, deliver and test the ground station. Airbus will build the data collection and storage units.
MUGS will be installed at the Geodesy Centre in Matera, Italy, property of the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Once completed – it's forecasted by the second half of 2019 - the ground station's ownership will be transferred from ESA to ASI.
As the Chief Operation Officer of e-GEOS, Bruno Versini, stated "The Matera User Ground Station will provide EDRS near-realtime data relay service from LEO satellites, allowing ASI to implement applications for the monitoring of our Planet enabled by the Sentinels of the Copernicus programme. This is an important result, achieved by joining our skills in operating in the ground segment and leadership in the technological integration with the engineering expertise of our partners."
