To correctly plan and evaluate any agronomic policy and food management, statistics and crop monitoring, at administrative level, appear as the first information necessity. Several worldwide agronomic zones are affected by cloud cover persistence, periodically or annual. Integrated EO data, both optical and SAR, can provide the Administrations, Assurance companies or farmer associations with the necessary synoptic and homogenous information layers.
The solutions are based on Earth observation data, aimed at monitoring crop growth, identification of damages, estimation of crop surfaces and production at regional or more local scale. Telespazio, along with other partners, has been working with the Italian Agricultural Minister since the last 30 years without interruptions, allowing the Administration to manage statistics and agronomic mapping.
For tropical zones or areas with cloud cover persistence, SAR data by COSMO-SkyMed can provide the effective solution for crop monitoring, especially for the major worldwide rice zones.
