e-GEOS, a joint venture between Telespazio and
the Italian Space Agency, has produced an assessment of the damage
suffered by the city of Concepcion, Chile, as a result of the
earthquake of 27 February 2010, which it has provided to the
UN's Department of Field Support and the Italian foreign affairs
ministry.
The images were acquired and produced as part
of the European Commission's G-MOSAIC (GMES Services for the
Management of Operations, Situation Awareness and Intelligence
for Regional Crises) project, in collaboration with EUSC (European
Union Satellite Centre).
e-GEOS's analysis is based on various optical
and radar images, particularly a Rapid Eye satellite image, and
another acquired by the International Space Station, both on
27 February, and one by the COSMO-SkyMed satellites on 28 February.
The map highlights some of the damage to Concepcion's
major infrastructure, in particular that sustained by the oil
refinery owned by Empresa Nacional de Petroleo, the Old Bridge
on the Bio-Bio River and the water purification plant.
