The Asian Crested Ibis was last assessed for the IUCN Red List in 2018. This species has become extinct over most of its former range and is now limited to a single area with an extremely small population. Although numbers are still rising and there are now perhaps approximately 500 individuals, which suggests a very rapid increase (owing at least in part to conservation efforts), the quality of its habitat is still in decline, which justifies keeping it on the Endangered list.
