The California Condor was last assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2020. After all surviving birds were removed from the wild in 1987, an intensive conservation programme (involving the reintroduction and release of birds bred in captivity) has led to a small but increasing population of this species in the wild. However, the population in the wild remains dependent on intensive conservation management efforts. It is classified as Critically Endangered.
