Galapagos National Park, Ecuador

The Española Giant Tortoise was last assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2015. Whalers hunting these tortoises for food led to population collapse; goats introduced to the island modified their habitat, causing a further decline in numbers. A breeding and reintroduction programme saved the species from extinction. It is classified as Critically Endangered
