The Española Giant Tortoise was last assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2015. Whalers hunting these tortoises for food led to population collapse; goats introduced to the island modified their habitat, causing a further decline in numbers. A breeding and reintroduction programme saved the species from extinction. It is classified as Critically Endangered.
