Pico da Vara/Ribeira do Guilherme – Ilha de S. Miguel N2000 site, Portugal

The Azores Bullfinch was last assessed for the IUCN Red List in 2021. Known in Portuguese as the Priolo, it is a passerine bird, endemic to São Miguel Island in the Azores archipelago. The species exhibits a preference for the native laurel forest and is entirely absent from highly altered habitats. Food shortages are potentially a problem throughout the year but are most severe in late winter. The birds’ historical decline is believed to be a consequence of logging, agriculture and predation by alien species (cats). It is classified as Vulnerable.
