The Lear’s Macaw was last assessed for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2019. The species, now with steadily increasing numbers, has a very small range with just two main breeding colonies occupying a very small area, and its Caatinga habitat continues shrink as native vegetation is cleared for agriculture. The species is therefore listed as Endangered.
