Challenge 3:
Sustainably nourish the global population

Generate knowledge, support innovation, and develop solutions to optimise the role of the ocean in sustainably feeding the world’s population under changing environmental, social and climate conditions.
Fishing is an important economic resource in the Arctic. Much of the production comes from aquaculture, the in-water farming and controlled production of aquatic organisms such as fish, molluscs, crustaceans and seaweed. Aquaculture, if properly regulated, is an effective and more sustainable alternative to intensive farming; but it can have highly damaging impacts on ecosystems through the release of excessive nutrients and chemicals. Many small-scale aquaculture sites in the Arctic are implementing strict protocols to permit the continued repopulation of species and conservation of biodiversity, as well as implementation of environmentally friendly farming and feeding practices.
