Challenge 3:
Sustainably nourish the global population

Generate knowledge, support innovation, and develop solutions to optimise the role of the ocean in sustainably feeding the world’s population under changing environmental, social and climate conditions.

IIn some of the remotest parts of the Arctic, local communities remain firmly anchored to small-scale fishing techniques using tiny boats, believed to be more equitable and sustainable. On the island of Spildra, in the middle of Kvænangen fjord in northern Norway, resident Sami communities view their traditional fishing techniques as untouchable. This standpoint has led to much debate with local institutions, especially when plans were made to grant a stretch of coastline to private companies for the installation of aquaculture sites. So far, the local traditions of the Sami have not allowed any kind of in-water farming.
