Oceans and seas, rivers and lakes, rice fields and raceways: the waters of the world provide not just fish but other aquatic foods that help humanity to address complex and critical global challenges – nutrition and public health, climate change and resilience, gender equity, social inclusion and sustainable growth within planetary boundaries. A crucial key to these food systems are artisanal fishers, fish farmers and fish workers, who are proof that small actions can have large impacts, providing food and livelihoods for millions.

This is the spirit of IYAFA 2022: the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. Love Planet Earth in celebration of IYAFA 2022 takes us on a journey around the world to view some of these activities from Space, to provide a glimpse, from a distant viewpoint, of the activities of small- scale artisanal fishers, fish farmers and fish workers. We take this year to recognize their contributions to human well-being, healthy food systems and poverty eradication through the responsible and sustain- able use of fisheries and aquaculture resources. While they may be small in scale, they are big in value.
