LOVE PLANET EARTH 2025

FROM SPACE TO THE BOUNDARIES OF THE “BLUE MARBLE”

How we admire and protect Polar ecosystems

Glaciers: silent guardians of bygone eras and vital resources for today’s Earth’s climatic balance.  These imposing bodies of ice covering the two extremes of the Planet are one of the most majestic, extreme, fragile expressions of nature. However, the breathtaking beauty of the Arctic and Antarctic is vulnerable and increasingly threatened by climate change and human activities.

To mark the United Nations’ declaration of 2025 as the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation, through a collection of spectacular images captured by the COSMO-SkyMed satellites, we shine a spotlight on the beauty and fragility of Polar ecosystems, and on the technological and environmental efforts needed to preserve them.

We embark on this journey in the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), joining a shared global effort to raise awareness of the fragility of the polar oceans and the need to develop innovative solutions for environmental protection, safeguarding even the remotest parts of the Earth. By collectively aligning research, investments and initiatives around a set of common challenges, the Ocean Decade community will contribute to well-functioning, productive, resilient, sustainable and inspiring oceans.

The 2025 edition of Love Planet Earth, endorsed as a Decade Activity by UN Ocean Decade, the Italian National Decade Committee (NDC) and the Italian Oceanographic Commission (COI), explores marine areas at the two ends of the Earth, on a journey through wonder, fragility and technological innovation.

The LOVE PLANET EARTH 2025 calendar, with its breathtaking images, is a powerful testament of COSMO- SkyMed’s vital mission to answer Earth’s most challenging questions. Thanks to the most advanced satellite technologies and geo-information solutions, we are able to monitor the most extreme regions, studying the polar ice caps and Arctic biodiversity, the permafrost and marine pollution. And we are able to provide crucial insights to drive our choices for better preserving the astonishing ecosystems of our planet.

The “Ocean Decade Challenges for collective impact” are 10 strategic objectives of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development to be achieved on the way to 2030, aimed at safeguarding our oceans and fostering sustainable practices for a healthier marine environment. The challenges describe the most immediate priorities for the Decade, shaping its overall contribution to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. They set up a framework for a wide range of stakeholders around the world who choose to engage and collaborate to trigger a real revolution in ocean science. Through the generation of information and knowledge, the Challenges will contribute to the development of stronger science-based policies at global, regional, national and local levels. Progress on each challenge is carefully monitored by a dedicated scientific committee, and they all aim towards the common goal of achieving a clean, healthy, resilient, safe, accessible and inspiring ocean by the end of the decade.
